On Saturday morning prior to the main workshops, Heath Richardson will run a short class for beginners on any instrument or anyone new to Celtic music, to explain how workshop style classes operate, to offer some advice on learning by ear, and to answer any questions.
Saturday Afternoon Electives
Sing your hearts out in harmony. Matt and Anna will teach a contemporary folk song in 4 parts. All voices, ages and abilities welcome!
Allan will focus on Compositions of Vincent Broderick, who was a flute and tin whistle player from county Galway.
Oscar is passionate about tune history, and will deliver a well-researched class. This was a popular elective at DCMW 2024, and one that Oscar repeated at other festivals owing to its success. Oscar’s very conversational style makes this an interesting option.
Ruth will focus on The amazing Elizabeth Crotty: Elizabeth Crotty (1885-1960) was a highly respected traditional concertina player from West Clare, Ireland. Elizabeth and her sister Maggie played together for local house dances, weddings, christenings and wakes at a time when only a very small number of women publicly played Irish traditional music. Elizabeth Crotty’s music style was simple but very rhythmic. Although she never made any commercial music recordings, her fame spread in the 1950s as a result of some private recording sessions that were aired on radio in Ireland. In this session, we’ll learn a number of her most popular tunes with her unique variations.
Ewen will focus on Cape Barren tune playing. Come and explore a few tunes in the style of fiddle legend Les Brown from the Flinders Islands. Foot stomping rollicking fun to be had.
