Máirtín Staunton 2026

Coming to Tasmania from Melbourne Victoria, Máirtín will teach the intermediate to advanced whistle and flute class. Máirtín Staunton is a renowned Irish flute player from County Mayo, Ireland, born into a musical family with a legacy spanning generations. His punchy rhythmic playing style combines the traditional music of County Mayo with a modern and fresh perspective. He has completed a Diploma is Irish Music Studies, and toured extensively around the globe, playing at various festivals, most notably at Woodford Folk Festival, The National Folk Festival, The National Celtic Festival, CresFest, Ceol Aneas (New Zealand) and Tocane Irish Music Festival (France). He has performed with many bands including The Melbourne Ceili Band at the All-Ireland Fleadh in Mullingar in 2023 and The Maggie Carty Band. His class will cover both tunes and technique, and is suited to intermediate to advanced musicians.

Elective: Máirtín is also an accomplished singer who is passionate about songs from the sean-nós tradition. His elective will look at a sean-nós song/air, then translate it so people understand the song and use this to guide playing the melody as an air.
